- Description:
- Digital Learning Day is a culminating event in a year-round national awareness campaign to improve teaching and learning for all children. On Digital Learning Day, we are asking everyone, no matter your comfort with technology–teachers, librarians, school leaders, afterschool programs, community groups, parents–to sign up and be counted in this effort by doing the following:
*Start a conversation. At a PTA/PTO meeting, in your school, department, library, or community-based organization, talk about your goals for your students and how digital learning can help meet their needs. Watch the Digital Learning Day National Town Hall meeting on February 1, 2012 and participate virtually. Watch the daylong webcast and pass it on to others who care about student learning! Not sure where to start? Check out our Getting Started section (coming soon) and soon you'll be on your way!
*Try one new thing. Sample an online lesson, use mobile devices in class, start a wiki, use digital storytelling, start a project-based learning unit, but above all, challenge your teaching, learning, and pedagogy and see what digital technology can do for you and the students you serve! Check out our resources and toolkits and go digital!
*Showcase your success. Submit a video of how you are innovating to give the students you work with the best learning experience possible! Better yet, have your students take the lead and show us how digital learning works for them!

- The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA
- Description:
- The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility hosts its next Science Series lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 7, with a discussion about carrying out research in a freezer – the extreme cold of the Arctic.
Guest speaker Victoria Hill, an oceanographer with Old Dominion University's bio-optics group, will talk about the work she and colleagues have undertaken to try to explain why ice near the North Pole is melting faster than scientific models had predicted.
In her talk, titled "Living and Working in the Freezer" Hill discusses the lack of data on the early spring in the Arctic – due to the extreme cold that makes it difficult to survive, let alone conduct science. From March through late April 2011, scientists from around the world braved deadly cold temperatures in the high Canadian Arctic in the name of science.
At the Catlin Arctic Survey group's floating "ice base" off Ellef Ringnes Island, the group investigated how organic material in fresh water near the surface of the ocean may be trapping heat from the sun, causing the upper ocean layers to warm. This is a new area of research and this mechanism represents a key uncertainty in accurate modeling of ice thickness and upper ocean heat content, according to Hill.
The lecture is free and open to students and adults with an interest in science. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m., in the CEBAF Center auditorium located at 12000 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, and will last about an hour. Seating in the auditorium and overflow area is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to about 300 people. People arriving once capacity has been reached will be turned away.
All those under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Everyone over 16 is asked to carry a valid photo ID. Security guards may perform ID, parcel and vehicle checks.

- The Community Music Division of Old Dominion University will hold auditions for the Hampton Roads Youth Wind Ensemble (HRYWE) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. All students should prepare a brief piece that demonstrates their best musical ability.
Students will also be asked to sight-read a brief musical excerpt. Snare drum players will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in the standard 26 American drum rudiments. Timpani students will be asked to tune timpani using a pitch pipe. Percussion students may be asked to sight-read auxiliary parts as well.
Membership in the HRYWE is open to students in grades 7-12 who are currently enrolled in their school band program. Home-schooled students in the same grade range are also welcome to audition. Auditions are free and students must complete a successful audition in order to gain membership in the HRYWE. If accepted into the program, the cost is $130 per student. Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in ODU's Diehn Center for the Performing Arts.
Formed in 1999, HRYWE is a unique performance outlet for band students interested in performing with a group of dedicated, like-minded students who are serious about music. It affords young musicians a chance to grow by allowing them to work closely with conductor Ledford Wilson and coaches over a long period of time, in a college setting, through weekly sectionals and rehearsals.
The HRYWE experience draws young musicians from throughout Hampton Roads, enabling them to form lasting friendships with people whom they might not otherwise meet. In addition to positive educational benefits and challenges, HRYWE is a focus for community pride and a testament to the talent of youth in the area.
To make an appointment for an audition, send an email to oducmd@odu.edu. Students who are unable to audition on Feb. 11 can request alternate times.
